[It] is important for [Church leaders to be] prepared to address the situation of Catholics with celiac disease who come to parishes and seek to receive Holy Communion in a safe, sensitive, and compassionate manner.

— U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, 2012

What are my options?

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has wonderful guidance on this matter, which we encourage you to share with the Priest of your local Parish if you encounter any problems receiving Communion.

Potential options to receive Communion, depending on your personal preference and the capacity of your Parish include:

  • Receive a low-gluten Host. There are several USCCB approved sources of low-gluten Hosts, which contain less than 20 ppm of gluten, making them Celiac-safe, but are not Wheat-free for those with a Wheat allergy. You should feel confident asking your regular Parish to purchase and provide safe Hosts for you—but it is generally recommended to bring your own (ideally in a Pyx) when you travel as back-up!

  • Receive by the species of Wine only. Ask your Priest to prepare a separate Chalice that either you alone will receive from (or, at least, you will be the first to receive from!) so that there is no cross-contamination from the co-mingling rite.

  • Complete a prayer of Spiritual Communion. If all else fails, we can always complete a prayer of Spiritual Communion. This can be found via a quick Google search (or, to support our project, consider purchasing a prayer card in our shop!)
